A Day in the Life of Adam Benson - Fieldwork Manager

Our next instalment in our day in the life series sees us catch up with Adam Benson who takes us through an average day as a Fieldwork Manager from morning coffee to lights out.

7:00am

I kickstart my day with a morning walk which is made all the more pleasant when the sun is shining. I usually grab a newspaper on my way back and then head home to make a strong coffee which always helps set me up for the rest of the day ahead.

My role is hybrid and I work the majority of my time from my home office in Macclesfield. Every other week I travel into our London office and it’s great to catch up with the wider team.

9am

As On Device Research is a global business, my working day typically starts by checking in on any activity that has come in overnight from our APAC and MENA offices. I ensure that any new studies for the international regions are successfully launched and monitor ongoing studies already in field. I then ensure the APAC and MENA teams are updated before they log off for their day.

11am

By mid-morning, I move on to checking in on live UK projects and update the client services team on their progress. This work usually covers everything from updating the team on project timelines and budgets, reviewing all project tracking documents which detail the next steps for each live project and allocating any new projects across the fieldwork team, ensuring there is an even spread of numbers and complexity.

12pm

Next up, I set to work on creating pixels for clients to track new incoming projects. I then update the data processing department with timelines on projects that are due to close and when handovers to the data processing team can be expected. I use the time before lunch to also catch up with external suppliers to ensure everything is running smoothly on projects.

1pm

Time to break for lunch. If I’m at home, I tend to head out for another walk and have something homemade. If I’m in the London office, I usually walk to a local Pret and grab a sandwich or salad.

2pm

Back to work. Straight after lunch we generally have our team meeting to discuss all live projects and progress. I update the team on wider initiatives outside of the regular day to day project work and we discuss the new projects that have come in and current sample numbers achieved on live projects.

4pm

Towards the end of the day, I usually catch up with the commercial team to discuss feasibility on any new client briefs and also find out what new projects are coming onboard. We also review how each different methodology (Out of home, digital) etc. is performing from a sampling perspective. I can also use this time to attend client kick-off calls with the client services and commercial teams on new projects.

5pm

I catch up on any outstanding admin tasks and clear down my email inbox ahead of the next day. I then make a list of any outstanding actions for the following day.

6pm:

Time to wrap up for the day. To wind down, after dinner I love to spend some time watching some live sport on TV or my guilty pleasure of Coronation Street (A sign of a true northerner at heart!)
